I come from an Italian American home, which is to say, I grew up eating good food and plenty of it. My mother and grandmothers were excellent cooks who for decades, day in and day out, prepared meals for their families which were, in addition to being nutritious, cultural experiences that were manifestations of their love and enriched our lives. I didn't think anything of this when I was young; this was just the way we ate. Eventually, it occurred to me that perhaps this was not the norm, (aside from other Italian American families ). It also occurred to me that if I wanted to continue to enjoy this gastronomic lifestyle, and I most assuredly did, it would behoove me to learn some of the recipes and traditions that I treasured. And I did learn. . .some of them. I hope this project will help me preserve what I learned while helping me discover what I missed. Along the way, I'll share some funny stories, sad stories, keen observations, recipes, and photos. I hope you enjoy my missives and invite you to share some of your own.
